Students at Cumberland Valley are beginning to build and finalize their schedules throughout January in preparation for the 2022-2023 school year. While some students are stressed with decisions about crafting their list of courses, others have eagerly taken the opportunity to choose popular and new classes that fit their career goals.

Course Selection can be particularly challenging for upcoming seniors as they choose classes in preparation for college. Some students are doubling-up on classes and taking electives that fit their specific career plans, while others are attempting to have a more lax senior year.

Junior Julia Daily said, “I am taking Honors Anatomy and Physiology to become a doctor, specifically a psychiatrist. I have also taken electives such as AP Psychology and Biochem.”

Junior Counselor Michelle Nitchman has attempted to make this process as easy as possible for students and parents planning for next school year.

Nitchman said, “I have been able to help facilitate this process by presenting the course selection materials to the students in class and to the parents through course selection night. Counselors have also dedicated themselves to helping individual students as well.”

“The presentations have prompted many of my students to reach out requesting to meet and discuss how many credits they have, what they need next year, and what they should take to reach their future career goals,” Nitchman said.

The counselors at Cumberland Valley give students the special privilege of being able to pick and choose their own classes and customize it to their interests.

Nitchman said, “They have the opportunity to personalize their education. Outside of the core courses, students have the ability to pursue a wide variety of electives. This gives them a chance to explore different career fields without having to commit. Students are given the opportunity to advocate for different level courses, whether they want to challenge themselves or take a course that isn't as challenging so they can focus their time and effort on certain content areas.”

The counselors hope that by allowing students to personalize their own schedules, they will learn the importance of being intentional with their decisions making.

This time of year can be bittersweet for the class of 2022 seniors, who no longer need to take part in the course selection process. From years of experience at Cumberland Valley, they can offer advice on which classes to take and how to schedule oneself accordingly.

Senior Allison Mitchell said, “Not being involved in course selection has really put into perspective how close I am to being done with high school and makes me emotional in terms of being a senior.”

“Make sure you take electives that interest you, and don’t be afraid to explore unknown areas…I think anatomy and sociology are two electives that everyone should take. I’ve heard that photography is awesome, along with ceramics,” Mitchell said.

Another popular choice among the Junior Class has been Mr. Levi Mumma and Mr. Keith Long’s History & Literature of Black Civil Rights course which explores the relationship between historic events and artistic responses.

Teachers had from January 11th to the 28th to put in their core course recommendations. Students have from January 31st to February 11th to review what their teachers entered and to select their elective courses. Administration will then begin creating the master schedule and running the requests.

Counselors will navigate through course conflicts in April and May, but the release date of finalized schedules for next school year has not been determined.
