Cumberland Valley High School is celebrating its annual 12 Days of the Holiday Season and 5 Days of Giving. These days are planned by student council in order to spread festive cheer and encouragestudents to donate food for New Hope Ministries.
“These activities are a great way to keep students engaged leading up to holiday break. It's important to remain supportive of the community, especially at this time of year,” student council president Kyleigh Marshall said. “As for the spirit days, they allow students to express their excitement for the season and share the same feeling with their classmates!”
The 12 spirit days are all holiday themed and aim to generate school spirit before break. They started with Door Decorating Day December 7th, when a variety of homerooms decorated their doors in fun and creative ways in order to celebrate the season. Other days include dress up days such as Holiday Tie Day December 8th, Holiday Sock Day December 11th, Holiday Pajama Day December 14th, Santa Hat Day December 15th, Ugly Holiday Sweater Day December 20th, and Red and Green Day December 21st.
“I’m really excited for Holiday Sock Day because I have festive reindeer socks! I want to see how other people participate and show off their school spirit,” senior Kristen Abraham said. “I’ve really enjoyed the holiday spirit days in years past; they’ve been one of the highlights of the school year.”
There are also days where student council distributes treats such as Hershey Kiss Day and Candy Cane Day; on these days, watch out for student council members holding bags of these candies to give out. On Punch and Cookie Day, student council members will be serving punch and cookies during lunch periods. Finally, there are days celebrating traditional holiday activities such as Holiday Card Day December 18th and Holiday Carol day December 22nd.
“I can’t wait until Hershey Kiss Day because I get to personally spread cheer around by giving out hershey kisses,” student council member senior Nikita Marathe said. “I am also bringing food to donate because of the same reason and I hope other students do as well.”
The 5 Days of Giving ask the student body to donate certain food items on certain days in order to collect food for New Hope Ministries. This food then comes back and benefits the high school’s own underprivileged students.
“The 5 Days is a great way for students to participate in the holiday spirit of giving by helping others in our community,” student council president Alaina Brenneman said.
Student council members will be coming around to homerooms in order to collect pasta December 8th, peanut butter December 12th, fruit snacks December 14th, cereal December 19th, and granola bars December 20th. However, students can bring in any of these foods at any time during the 12 days.
“I remember doing food drives in middle school and how much food we would raise because we competed as teams. I hope we raise just as much food this year, especially since it’s a competition between homerooms. It’s great that the food benefits CV kids,” student council member junior Avni Sanghvi said.
