The boys basketball team has open gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They also hit the weight room those days, following a two hour practice from about 3:15 to 5:30.

Coach David Vespignanni is the new head coach for the varsity team. He has been coaching for 18 years. The last two years he worked at Cedar Cliff. Before that he was a coach in Arizona for four years, in Texas for two, Florida for three, and prior to that he was a college assistant coach for three years.

Coach Vespignanni runs the open gyms along side with Coach Wolf and Coach Hostetler.

“In open gym we work on a lot of fundamental skills. Ball handling, passing, shooting, defense, and we are slowly putting in offense and defenseplays we will use during the
year. Then taking that, we scrimmage,” said Vespignanni.

Riley Schujter, a senior, and junior Harris Vorwald have been attending open gyms for the past three weeks.

John Breeden is the boys' trainer who has been coming every Monday and Wednesday for the past three weeks.

“When we are with John Breeden we do a lot of dribbling and shooting drills. We also do this exercise with the agility band, where your partner holds you back and you have to run. It is very hard,” said Vorwald.

The last two sundays the boys had shootouts. The first one was at York College. The second one was at Hood College. Both of those shootouts the boys went 2-1.

Open gyms are to help condition the basketball players for the season. Tryouts are on November 16 and 17th.

Since it is a new and fresh season there are always expectations.

“ We have a lot of kids coming back, so our hope is to make the district playoffs and beyond that we just
see what happens, but the focus is the district playoffs,” Vespignanni said.

“I’m expecting a lot of wins, hopefully a playoff game and just having a lot of fun,” Schutjer said.

CV boys basketball promotes people that are going to be committed and boys that will put effort and time into practice.

“I’m just going to bring a great attitude every day to practice, and just try to have as
much fun as possible,”  Schujter said.
