The upperclassmen at Cumberland Valley now have the option to eat off-campus lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. In the midst of many negative changes due to COVID, this addition is a privilege students are responding to positively.

Senior Ella Ferguson said, “My favorite thing about it is being able to spend some time with my friends during the hectic school day. It cheers me up if I’m having a bad day or had a hard test. It is truly just a nice, needed break.”

In order to leave the building, students must complete a simple signout before heading to the destination of their choice. The popular locations include local restaurants, home, friends’ houses, and anywhere with an outdoor seating option.

“For us the Starbucks and Chipotle complex is our favorite spot to eat because we have multiple food options like Starbucks, Chipotle, Jersey Mikes, and Freshido. There is seating outside so even if we pack lunch it’s still nice to get away and eat with my friends off-campus,” Ferguson said.

This option of lunch takes place during the newly implemented Nest periods, which run from 11:20 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Ferguson said, “I wish we had a little more time off of campus for lunch, but other than that, I have no complaints… I think an hour and 45 minutes would be more reasonable.”

This course of action has been received so well that the option was extended to the Junior class as well starting the week of September 13.

Junior Gretchen Osborne said, “It’s by far my favorite part of the day. I love the freedom of just being able to drive around and eat with my friends… even if that means five of us end up at my house.”

Based on the success in the initial weeks of school, Cumberland Valley plans to continue offering this option for years to come.
