The CV girls’ tennis season is in full swing. The start of the season was August 20th. Since then, the team has played Mifflin County (5-0), Northern York (4-1), and Lower Dauphin (2-3).

The team’s main goals this year are succinct and straightforward.

“Our goals are to win as many matches as possible and to stay united,” Captain Vaishnavi Datta (‘19) said.

This season, like last year, the team’s biggest rival is Hershey. Other rivals and significant matches to look forward to are Carlisle and State College.

The team maintains good communication, trust, and compatibility, especially among doubles partners, through team bonding traditions. The girls make sure that they are a tight knit group on and off the court by spending a lot of time together outside of school.

“We go bowling, we just went laser tagging, and we go out to eat a lot. We’ve been trying especially hard to do stuff together this season. As the captain it’s my final year and I’m really pushing that aspect of the team,” Datta said.

Tennis is very much a mental sport that requires strategy and endurance. These qualities, as well as the overall nature of the team and coaching help the girls develop as students and young adults, not just athletes.

“You have to have a lot of mental strength to get through a lot of your matches. You need to know how to push through. It takes a lot of focus. Those things are really things that apply to everything and are universal. If you gain those skills from tennis, which I did, you can carry
them into the rest of your life, like at school,” Datta said.

There is much room for individual growth in tennis, which is emphasized as much as the overall advancement of the team.

Players to watch this season include Captain Vaishnavi Datta (‘19), Judy Chiwaka (‘20), Lauren Noss (‘19), Anushka Konka (‘20), Natasha Kruelski (‘19), and Emma Ducceschi (‘20).

Datta, Chiwaka, Ducceschi, and Noss are undefeated thus far.

The team has a game against Red Land on this upcoming Tuesday (9/11). They continue to have daily practices, team bonding activities, and weekend training sessions in order to achieve their overarching and personal goals.
