The second marking period is well on its way at this point of the year, but that should not deter students from joining and participating in new clubs and activities throughout CVHS. This first semester is the perfect time to join new clubs because by now, many of them have their meeting dates established as well as their course of action for the year.

One of these such clubs is Memory Club, currently being led by Senior Anna Cavanaugh. Memory Club has many purposes, but the main goal is to prepare students for the USA Memory Championship, which has yet to determine a 2022 date.

The USA Memory Championship is an olympiad style competition that tests participants' memory in different aspects. The events of the competition include names and faces, speed numbers, speed cards, random words, and poetry.

The competition has both single and team events that any student above the age of 10 can participate in. CV’s memory club is designed to help students prepare for and excel at this competition.

Memory club serves other purposes though. Participating in memory competitions and games helps to strengthen memory overall and can help improve quality of life. Training your memory helps your brain in a variety of ways and helps to stimulate it without complex challenges. Training your brain has great benefits like improving mental health as well as overall intelligence and capabilities.

“I joined the club freshman year and loved it, and I have done it ever since. Sophomore year I was made a co-captain and I have been a captain for the past two years to keep the club running”, Cavanaugh said. “Students should join the club because improving your memory actually does a lot of things for your brain. Our practices are only twice a month and snacks are always provided.”

Club meetings occur every other Friday after 7th period. If you are interested in joining the club, you can contact Cavanaugh at [email protected]. This club has a lot of benefits to joining and it would look great on any senior's college applications.

There is still plenty of time to join and begin improving your memory, and tons of time to practice for the next USA Memory Championship.
