Cumberland Valley’s annual Powder Puff game was November 20 at Chapman Field. The flag football game consisted of two teams of 7 girls from the Junior and Senior class. They matched up at 7 p.m. to settle the rivalry between the two that had formed over the past three weeks.

Both teams put in practice hours over the past month preparing for the game. Each team is coached by players of CV’s football team. They helped the teams organize a lineup, create plays, and better understand the game.

The Junior Team led by Owen Rose, Jake Sines, Gavin Kendrick, Nolan Bazulka, and Ryan Hunter has been working on many offensive plays. Sines said the team had a strong offensive lineup consisting of Hannah Hoover, Sienna Manns, and Kate Collins. Ella Pickel played quarterback as her strong throwing arm from track played an important role in the teams offense.

The defensive side of the team relied mostly on speed. Claire Shaffer, Olivia Stouffer, and Morgan Smeltz had proved to be the team’s best defenders at practice. Callie Will had also shown good defensive skills as her height made it easy for her to block passes.

Head Coach Owen Rose said, “The biggest challenge we had to work through was determining our starting lineup, it’s difficult when you don’t know everybody’s skill level.”

After the first practice, the team had a better understanding of everyone’s skills, and where they would be most beneficial on the field.

Though the team ended up with a tough loss after a few tricky plays from the seniors, they now know what they can improve on for next year. Coach Gavin Kendrick said they need to work on their passing game, as well as better defense. They feel confident that they can come away with the win next year.

Check back later for a recap from the senior team.
