From a young age people are told to think about their future, and what they want to pursue when they are done with school. Some people go to college to continue studies, others join the military, some start  companies and businesses on their own. There is a different path for everyone.

Several high school students choose to get jobs while in high school as a way to earn money, improve certain life skills, and help prepare for the future.

Working in high school affects the amount of free-time left to do schoolwork or make other plans.

“I work six hours on Saturday and Sunday. I do my schoolwork after, and I don’t have as much time to hang out with friends, “ Wegmans employee Mason Tiday said.

“I work three days a week depending on my schedule, and I work from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. I use all of my study halls and the amount of time I have between when I get home and work to do my homework,“ Essex (retirement home) employee Sofia Meier said.

“My hours are from 5:00 to 7:00 after school on Wednesday and 11:00 to 4:00 on Saturdays. I
get my schoolwork done on study hall and after work," Chick-fil-a employee Caroline Weary said.

Along with time management, working while in high school also helps to teach important skills needed in the future.

“Working at Essex has helped me become more disciplined; which will prepare me for future experiences as well as school,” Meier said.

“Having a job for sure is helping me prepare for life after school because it’s preparing me to stay organized,” Weary said.

“I think having a job is beneficial because it gives me an idea of what having a job will be like, and some students won’t have the experience I have. I would recommend students get a job," Tiday said.

In the end, getting a job as as student is a choice. Ask a friend or talk with parents when considering employment.
