The holiday season is a time of joy in the community. It is a time to give back to others, especially during this difficult year. Many families have traditions, regardless of the holiday, to celebrate each year with their loved ones. Traditions are a great way to share holiday spirit.

Junior McKaylee Swatt said, “A holiday tradition for my family is to go to a nice dinner followed by church on Christmas Eve.”

Junior Ean Morrison said, “Basically my family from New York and both my sets of grandparents come into town and we have a fun dinner together. Then we light the menorah and say a couple prayers and basically just hang out all night as a family. We exchange gifts and play board games, sometimes the dreidel. My grandmother makes potato latkes and applesauce as a snack.”

Senior Aubrey Martin said, “During the holidays, my family typically gets together and spends Christmas together. This year that can’t happen, but our traditions will stay the same. We usually do the same breakfast every year: the family recipe, egg casserole, while we spend the morning relaxing. While we may not be able to spend the holidays with our family, we still make the most of it and keep our traditions in place.”

There are many creative ways to celebrate each holiday. Common Christmas traditions in the community include leaving cookies and milk for Santa, using Advent calendars to countdown the days until Christmas, and spreading magic with an Elf on the Shelf.

Festive traditions for everyone during the winter season include ice skating, watching classic movies, shopping, and donating to a local food bank or shelter.

Traditions become an essential part of families by bringing them together with a sense of unity and belonging at the holidays. Traditions connect people by celebrating and honoring their past generations, and they hold a special place in people’s hearts.
