The wrestling team started preparing for their winter season last week and it started strong. “I took the guys out tonight and they did a hard workout,” Coach David Heckard says.

They work out five days a week from now to November, then six days a week in and out of school. Junior Jake Lucas said, “Consistency is one of the bigger things, you don't get better if you're not consistent. That's something I learned junior year.”

Heckard said, “For preseason the goal is to get guys’ physically and mentally ready to go into the wrestling mat.” Most of the individual goals this season are to make top three of Super 32, the biggest high school tournament in the country.

“I want to be a 32 Superstate Champion this year, that’s important to me because I love the sport of wrestling.” Senior Ben Monn said. “Every time I step on the mat. I want to give it my all and succeed, and I overall just try to be better and the best I can be.”

The wrestlers have to face many battles that push them to be more disciplined. Some of the more difficult physical challenges the wrestlers face are their workouts and injuries.

“One of my biggest obstacles was my freshman year, when I dislocated my elbow," Lucas said. "I was pretty much out all season, I still wrestled but it wasn't the same.”

A few wrestlers are going to be competing for the state championship this coming season.

“My goal is to be a state champ, I want to be someone really important that people can remember. That's what motivates me to be a good wrestler," Monn said.

The team's first home match is December 11.
