Hate crimes like the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh almost a week ago, affect all of America. This recent shooting reflected Anti-Semitic views which effected those of the Jewish community in particular. Americans from across the nation showed support and discussed how it affected them, but how did it affect CV students and the CV community?

For Sydney Hutcheson, a sophomore from a Jewish background, the tragic event hit especially close to home.

“The Pittsburgh shooting affected me because some people in the local Jewish community knew the members of the congregation in Pittsburgh that were killed. This was devastating to me because no one deserves to feel that intense pain in their lives,” Hutcheson said.

The events may have taken place across the State, but the effect spread throughout the Jewish community; even to right here in Central PA.

“The Pittsburgh shooting was a devastating time. I was very sad when I found out the events had occurred. I also felt very scared for my own security in my school and synagogue because I realized that it could happen here too,” Hutcheson said.

The tragedy has rekindled discussions about how to end mass shootings and violent hate crimes.

“I believe that there should be more background checks for those who have the interest in buying guns. I also think that there should be a better influence set by those who run our country to show that everyone should be kind and positive and accept one another,” Hutcheson said.

But Hutcheson said the fix won’t come from Washington alone.

“There needs to be an understanding that everyone should accept those around them and embrace the diversity in this country because it is what makes this country an incredible place to be in.”

Prayers and kind thoughts were shared by the country throughout the mourning of this horrific event that affected many.

“They [the country as a whole] responded by sending their prayers and taking action through their right to vote. This event even though it was tragic helped people to see that there is hate but that kindness is the most important thing,” said Hutcheson.

This recent shooting was a tragic event that not only effected those nearby, but it affected the whole country especially those of Jewish communities.
