The CV Field Hockey team’s 2023 preseason closes as their season starts Friday against Cedar Cliff. A fast-paced preseason has the team optimistic about the Fall of 2023.

“The coaches have been keeping us in very good shape. We practice every day for an hour and a half and are always watching film,” said Junior Captain Morgan Smeltz. Smeltz is a midfielder/defender for the Eagles and just recently committed to Saint Francis University to further her field hockey career.

The girls have been pinpointing ball control and cardio all preseason and are focused on making improvements every practice.

But preseason training doesn’t just pertain to physical work. According to Smeltz, one of their biggest strengths coming into the new season is their chemistry.

“Our varsity is super close. Really trusting each other when we have the ball and being confident in our abilities definitely set us apart from other teams.”

Along with preseason practice on the field, the girls have also been doing community service to continue growing their bond as teammates. Morgan believes this will strongly help them move forward this season.

The team works on offensive and defensive drills, even training defenders to play all over the field in other positions. Defensive footwork has been a focus this preseason too.

Between the Eagles’ extensive offseason training and strong team chemistry, the girl’s season is looking bright.

Smeltz and her teammates are confident the Eagles will come out strong for their season opener this Friday at Cedar Cliff.
