Money, money, money. Everyone wants it, but it doesn't just grow on trees. Teenagers want to be able to go out with their friends to have a good time, but parents won't always lend the cash they need to have a good time. Money has got to be earned, and teenagers getting jobs is getting more popular.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds is just 9.2%. Nowadays, with companies hiring at the age of as low as 15, it's becoming easier to get into the workforce as a teen.

Some of the most popular places to work for CV students are Wegmans, Chick-Fil-A, Giant, Target, etc. Target is hiring with a minimum wage of $12 per hour. Giant is also hiring at all three Mechanicsburg locations for around $9-$11 per hour. Wegmans hires at the age of 15 for anyone looking for a jump start. Chick-Fil-A also hires at 15, and there are several CV students who work there. . Most fast food restaurants in the area hire a lot of teenagers, as well as sit down restaurants, so the options are almost limitless.

Many students know that they want money and that they will need a job to do so, but what do employers require for applicants? Employers are looking for someone with flexible hours, good commitment, and responsibility. A work permit is required to get a job, which students can pick up at the office here at the high school.

Getting a first job can be scary. It can be hard to juggle school, a job, and other after school activities. Junior Tyler Ackerman said, “It can be a lot to handle, but at Giant it is easy to change my schedule so I still get everything done”.

Junior Reilly McMullen said, “I still have a lot of free time to hang with my friends and it's nice because work keeps me occupied.”

A first job is a great way to get experience for after school, and is easier than some think. Not only will students be making money, but relationships will also be made.
