The Break the Silence Club started strong in 2022 with many meetings and will continue having a productive year.

Aparna Raghu, a current senior at Cumberland Valley High School, is the president of the Break the Silence Club. “The Break the Silence is a club dedicated to breaking the silence by ending the stigma around substance misuse and addiction,” said Raghu. “We also hope to raise awareness and provide education on issues relating to substance misuse in our school and wider community.”

To give a general overview of what the club entails, Raghu said, “Members in the club attend meetings, learn about recovery, substance misuse around the world, and write articles/create infographics for the blog which displays various posts about different subtopics such as alcoholism, addiction as a disease, and E-Cigarettes.” The club also has various guest speakers to talk about their recovery stories and allows students to spread their advocacy for this important topic.

The club has planned many future events for 2023. Raghu shares a future large event that the club will have, “At the end of year, club members will hopefully get the chance to volunteer at a 5K that we will organize to promote the cause in partnership with Sara’s House of Hope.” Partnering with organizations with goals of promoting a healthy lifestyle will allow Break the Silence to spread their message and influence people to take a stand in their community.

The club also has another goal planned for the end of the year. “We hope that club members have learned a lot of the cause and are educated enough to help those in the community who are struggling.” The Break the Silence club aims to create young changemakers that will take charge and create a community where the stigma behind substance misuse and addiction is completely eradicated.

When asked about why a Cumberland Valley student should join the Break the Silence club, Raghu said, “This club is for someone who wants to learn more about substance misuse and addiction as well as its relevance to our generation. Also, someone who wants to make a difference in the community while educating themselves should join this club.”

With many activities, goals, and events planned for the rest of the year, the Break the Silence club is heading on an exciting, hopeful track for the rest of the school year.
