Profound actor and film producer Will Smith released his newest movie King Richard to theatres and exclusively to HBO Max on November 19th. The biographical drama tells the untold story of how Richard Williams brought his daughters, Venus and Serena Williams, to the top of the tennis industry. It theme of the value of family renders it perfect for the grateful mood of the hoiday break.

The film is rated PG-13 and is 2 hours and 24 minutes long. The critics from Rotten Tomatoes rated King Richard with an impressive 91% and it received 4 out of 5 stars from Common Sense Media.

King Richard is an inspiring and motivational sports piece that highlights the importance of following your dreams, while maintaining the unity of a family.

The story begins with rigorous training on tennis courts in Compton, California, and follows the family’s journey up until 14 year old Venus’s first tournament championship match in 1994 against world ranked Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. The film keeps you invested while creating a strong sense of pride in the Williams family as they are underdogs in the tennis community and in society due to race norms in the formative years.

There is such masterful storytelling in this film as Will Smith brings the title role of Richard Williams to life. Smith’s performance was extremely admirable as he perfectly portrays the desire for success in the face of consistent adversity. The portrayal of Serena by Demi Singleton and Venus by Saniyya Sidney was commendable as well.

Personally, I enjoyed that the movie follows Venus’s character more closely as the eldest daughter of Richard, before Serena had made such a large name for herself. I would recommend this film for all people interested in the sporting industry and for young girls aspiring to reach their goals.
