The Cumberland Valley Varsity Cheerleading team competed at the annual State Championship April 10. It was a very abnormal year for the team as this competition is usually held in February. However, the team dedicated countless hours of practicing for this competition. Due to COVID-19, the atmosphere was very different since the fanbase was very limited compared to past years. Each girl competing was allowed one spectator. The remaining parents and supporters tailgated in the parking lot of the Giant Center to cheer on the team from afar.

The performance had only one error, but due to the difficulty and level of skills executed, the team earned 2nd place. It was an exciting moment as the cheerleaders and coaches did not know what to expect. Because of this challenging and inconsistent year, 2nd place was a huge accomplishment.

Senior Amanda Murin said, “This season has been a tough one but the fact that we had states to begin with was a blessing. With this season being the longest one we’ve ever had due to Covid, we have battled injuries, illnesses, and being burned out. We had to wear masks during our performance at states and we didn’t have our huge fan backbone like we usually do. We knew that would be the case and we really overcame that factor and put a decent routine on the mat. With our performance we didn’t expect to get the outcome we did. We were so blessed to have gotten 2nd and not our focus is strictly on nationals and we are ready to fight for redemption.”

Cumberland Valley has kept the tradition alive of placing in the top two at every state competition. Endless hard work from the team and coaches has been proved every year. From injuries to quarantines this season, the varsity team has adapted exceptionally and made memories that will last a lifetime.
